Marquet Pasqual (1942)

Pollença, Antoni Marquet Pasqual’s home town, is a town of fifteen thousand inhabitants, and from the antiquity has a great pictorial tradition, where lots of artists from other places have lived and worked.

In this way, at the end of the XIXth century and beginning of the XXth, attracted by the beauty and majesty of these lands, outstanding artists began to arrive, among them important painters of different tendencies and styles. Santiago Russiñol, Joaquim Sorolla, Eliseo Meyfrén, Mosgraber, etc., were some of the first, followed by Anglada Camarasa and Tito Cittadini, among others.

Although their different origin, most of them were joined by their stay in Montparnasse, Paris, where they had worked under the influence of the new trends of impressinism and fauvism, innovators of the plastic of that time.

The light of the north of Mallorca, where Pollença is located, has some very special characteristics, its great brightness changes the chromatism of colours and it gives them a great intensity. You can see the “Cavall Bernat”, majestic cliff in Cala Sant Vicenç, of a dark blue that in a short time changes into intense vermilion, or some mountains with a striking violet, combined with yellows and greens of maximum brightness. The luminous impact and the beauty of Pollença’s environs changed the plastic vision of that great artist, and great riches of colour increased their palette. Those influences of light, the influence they had among each other, surely took them towards an own impressionism, generous to pastes, riches of colour, brightness and great poetic harmony.

From the creation of that own style of painting, to transmit this style to their followers, we can considerate they created a school, and this is the so argued Pollença’s School, refused by some people and so loved by others.

Marquet Pasqual was born in Pollença in 1942 and started painting when he was about    nine years old. From his childhood he felt great attraction for art in general, but especially for painting; he deeply admired those painters of Pollença’s School, who, later, became his teachers. In 1953 began his drawing studies with professor Montserrat Amengual, and from 1956 he was a disciple of the Catalan painter Carles Got. In 1959 and 1960 he studiet in the Art and Occupation School in Palma de Mallorca, and in 1961 completed his formation in the Superior School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

In April 1960 he showed, for first time, his work in an exhibition in “Art Study”, from professor Got, in Pollença. From this year he participated and realized different shows in Mallorca and mantained some contacts with teachers he admired, visiting their studies and listening to their advices, among them has always made stand up Dionis Bennàssar i Anglada Camarasa, a part from professor Carles Got. At the same time, he is in contact with young painters from Mallorca and Catalunya.

It was from 1990, more confident with his work, that he begam his expansion areund the peninsula and Europe, showing his paintings in different galleries in Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia and Madrid. He also exhibits repeatedly in important galleries in France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. In 1991 he made some wall-paintings in Saint Sever monastery, in France. Some years later he made a serial of three wall paintings in the theatre of the same French town. In 2000 he was selected to make a wall-painting in Häckenberga Castle, Sweden, forming a group with other fifteen artist from around Europe.

During his vast plastic trajectory, his work has been reviewed by prestigious critics, newspaper and specialised magazines journalists, who have always showed their interest for te work of Marquet Pasqual.
